Embedding in the Local and National Research Landscape

Why Jena?

Jena is one of Europe’s leading locations for virus bioinformatics, microscopy, and photonic technologies. Jena hosts an exceptional concentration of scientific infrastructure dedicated to virus research and technology development:

  • European Virus Bioinformatics Center (EVBC) – the largest virus bioinformatics network in Europe
  • Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse” – world-class microscopy for tracking the smallest biological particles
  • Leibniz-Center for Photonics in Infection Research
  • Bioinformatics Core Facility – advanced support for experimental design and data analysis
  • Virus database working group (NFDI4Microbiota) – building future-ready virus data infrastructures
  • Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN VIROINF – international training network on virus–host interactions
  • InfectoGnostics Research Campus
  • Leibniz ScienceCampus InfectoOptics
  • Abbe Center of Photonics (ACP)
  • Center for Translational Medicine (CeTraMed)
  • Center of Medical Optics and Photonics (CeMOP)
  • Jena Center for Soft Matter (JCSM)

VirusREvolution will play a central role in the German virus research landscape. Our PIs are involved in further collaborative projects with researchers from other German universities and institutions. The selected scientists from outside Jena play leading roles on a national and international level. The results from VirusREvolution will be of high interest to other research groups and national institutes within and beyond Germany, for example, the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (DSMZ), federal institutes Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), and Robert Koch Institute (RKI), and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI). The map of the CRC VirusREvolution network shows connections to the national research community, with synergistic effects. Substantial links to the NFDI consortia, expeciall NFDI4Microbiota, NFDI4Biodiversity, NFDI4BioImage, and NFDI4Chem are established.
